Veterinary Services and Care in Shanghai
The veterinary services industry in Shanghai and in Mainland China is undergoing rapid changes. However, it should be no surprise to learn that academic training and diagnostic and treatment experience in the PRC lag behind industry standards in developed countries. Some vaccinations are not available in China (e.g. FeLV) and some pharmaceutical drugs for pain and humane euthanasia are not as accessible to local veterinarians as they are to foreign consultants. A Global Times article offers some insight into the "somewhat messy" state of the PRC veterinary services market, where the "de-barking" of dogs is currently the most popular medical procedure.
Professional care by well-educated and trained veterinarians is a cornerstone of SCAA's work. |
SCAA's Vet Partner - Pets Are Wonderful (PAW)
SCAA's exclusive vet partner is Shanghai PAW and Pudong PAW Veterinary Clinics. A professional team of veterinarians from Australia, The U.K, and China provide the highest standard medical care for all SCAA foster animals.
Since 2005, PAW has generously provided SCAA with discounted care for each foster cat and dog. SCAA's Medical Director is a clinic partner, helping us set and maintain high medical care standards in the best interest of our animals and within the resources realistically available to us.
Choosing an exclusive vet partner to prepare our foster animals for adoption provides our animals with consistency in care. This consistency in quality care is one reason SCAA is the only animal welfare organization in China to gain Association status with RSPCA International.
SCAA is pleased to recommend PAW to Shanghai's pet owners. Visit PAW's website for detailed information on preventative pet care, treatment, surgeries, diagnostics, and behavior consultation services provided by professional, bilingual staff: www.pawivs.com

Additional Veterinary Resources
SCAA does not recommend any veterinary clinics that sell animals due to the disreputable nature of the breeding industry in Shanghai (and China in general).
We believe that widespread concern over the poor standards in local breeding facilities (ie mills) should be backed up with action - choose veterinary & grooming services at venues that say no to selling pets.
We only recommend veterinarians and/or clinics with international-standard services - services provided by foreign and/or foreign-trained vets working alongside Chinese colleagues and using safe medicines.
