Domestic Pet Travel in China

Picture
Moving your pet from one city to another within Mainland China is not difficult.  Some key points to note in preparing your pet to travel from Shanghai to another Maindland China city include:
  • Finalizing a domestic move requires one month preparation time
  • Pets cannot travel by train in China (despite what some pet owners have done, it is stritcly prohibited)
  • Pets travelling by car require a health certificate (although most owners do not get one and have not been inspected)
  • Pets travelling by air are not allowed in the cabin
  • In the hottest and coldest months, move pets by air-conditioned/heated car if possible

Although owners may organize a domestic travel permit and travel with their pet as baggage on a domestic flight (temperatures permitting), many pets are quickly and efficiently moves between Chinese cities using a pet transport agent.

Steps & Tips for Domestic Pet Moves from Shanghai

Pet transport preparations in Shanghai involve a 2-STEP process:
Step 1. Bring pet to your district's approved government veterinary clinic (ie clinics that can do dog-license vaccinations)
Step 2.

Your airline will advise when they require the health certificate to secure a pet booking and how to submit it.

Domestic Pet Transport Tips

Pets Travelling by Air. Chinese airlines and airport staff and ground crew are not as accustomed to transporting pets as those in North American or Europe.  However, with some careful planning, moving your pet can be a safe experience.

Pets Travelling by Car/Van/Bus.  Many ground pet transportation services are advertised or easily located through local vet clinics, however not all services provide the same level of care to the animals they move.

To avoid your pet being caged and placed in the dark and noisy luggage hold at the bottom of a passenger coach (this has happened to SCAA), please clarify in advance that your pet will be inside an air conditioned or heated car, van or bus and that someone will be responsible for supervising the pet move from destination to arrival if you are not accompanying your pet.

PET TRAVEL SAFETY TIP: To ensure curious people do not accidentally or negligently release your pet from his or her transport crate, we strongly advise pet owners to secure crate doors with plastic zip ties.

These are widely available online (taobao) and in some supermarkets and home DIY shops.
