SCAA @ School: Education Initiatives for the 2016-2017 School Year

SHANGHAI EXPERIMENTAL SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL DIVISION
Another successful school year of partnerships and activities with staff and students from kindergarten, primary, and secondary schools around Shanghai.
We kicked off this semester with a fantastic example of a dog's true purpose, as Pepe accompanied us on our recent visit to the first grade students at the Shanghai Experimental School International Division.

Students had covered a classroom unit on animals and we were happy to show them what helping needy companion animals looks like in person.

SCAA's school visits are an opportunity for students to discuss what animals need and why it's important to take our responsibility towards our pets, strays, wildlife, and our environment seriously.

Compassion is universal, and fostering a keen interest at an early age in taking care of those who can't take care of themselves helps foster compassion in general; a win-win for kids and the community they will grow up to lead someday.

Student safety and comfort are paramount. Pepe's vaccination records are displayed when we discuss veterinary care (what animals need: the RSPCA's Five Freedoms) and students are encouraged to talk about their fear of dogs before any introductions are made. SCAA's goal in visiting schools is not to turn everyone into an animal lover.
Our presentation and Pepe's supervised interaction with students helps dispel myths about dogs (and former stray and abandoned animals in particular), educates students on how to safely interact with dogs, and reinforces respect for anyone who prefers not to interact with animals.

There's always plenty of interest in Pepe and genuine amazement he's a rescue - rarely do the students recognize him from our "before & after" rescue and rehabilitation slide show!

As usual, we were impressed with Pepe's patience and enthusiasm with the students eager to meet him, pet him, and vie for a chance to give him treats. Pepe's comfort is as important as the student's interest in positively interacting with him.
SCAA would like to extend a special thank you to the administration, staff, and students at the Shanghai Experimental School International Division for hosting us and enthusiastically supporting our work to help companion animals in need.

Would your class or school like to host SCAA (and our mascot Pepe) to talk about pet care, animal welfare, what animals need, and how to safely interact with new animals? Please contact us at education@scaashanghai.org.
