Foster care is a primary service of SCAA. Foster care volunteers take rescued animals into their homes to isolate them for observation, help them receive medical care, and provide loving nurturing. We believe it is the right of every companion animal to have a safe, healthy life in a loving home, and foster parents make this happen. Below is a typical example, written by his adopter, of how foster care and adoption can save an animal’s life and bring such joy to an adoptive family. If you live in Shanghai and cannot own a pet long-term but would still love the company of a cat or dog, foster care may be the perfect solution for you! This was when we first saw them at Baoshan. They were all so healthy.

Our first week we went! Here they were about 10 days old.

The next time we went back to Baoshan, they were all terribly sick, most of their eyes were glued closed by the gunk from the Calici virus. They all had blisters on their tongues and they could barely breathe through their noses. The only way we could get them to eat was to syringe feed all 5 of them.

This one (Sugar) would take a bottle, and she would nurse too. She was the only one nursing at all, so she was HUGE compared to the others. To this day she still gets the nickname "Fatty"!

This picture has all 5 kitties after about 5 days of syringe feeding. We lost one of the white ones (Teensy) and one of the gingers (Penny).

Both of them got so bad that at the end I was having to prop their
little mouths open with a q-tip to help them to breathe, since they
wouldn't open their mouth to breath and their noses were so clogged. They just sat there gasping.

This is a few weeks later, Sugar is quite the cottenelle kitty in this one isn't she?! (She's quite a sneaky kitty these days though...)

Here are the 3 survivors from left to right: Pete, Milou and Sugar Mifan. Milou's eye was so badly infected! This picture is when they're really on the mend. (Of course now it is healed, but part of the layers grew together, so his right eye is now a little smaller than the left. Actually, it looks very sweet, kind of like he's about to cry!) Look how much bigger Sugar is than the others! That's the power of mama's milk!

TUNA!!!! FINALLY!!!! Once they started eating tuna, of course we were in the clear.

Leah and Seth reading with Milou.

Sugar Mifan, Pete, and Milou. Look how beautiful and healthy the are! So so sos os so sweet.

Ahhhhh... sun!
