Giving up a Pet - Alternatives to Consider First
In many ways giving up your pet is a bigger decision than adoption as it represents backing out of a commitment to care for your pet for his or her lifetime - through life's milestones of moving, marriage, kids and the pet health and behavior challenges pet owners sometimes face.
There are undoubtedly stressful times in pet ownership and feeling overwhelmed or like problems can't be solved is natural. Sometimes good advice and the knowledge that other pet owners have faced and resolved similar issues can save a pet from being given up and the potential negative consequences that result from such a stressful event.
SCAA encourages all pet owners to first consider alternatives to giving up pets in some common situations that lead people to reconsider their commitment.
SCAA's mission is not re-homing pets. Why? Because they have owners. There are too many needy rescues that deserve a chance at foster care, quality vet care, and a forever home, for us to dedicate our limited resources to re-homing pets.
Before looking to animal welfare organizations like SCAA, please read through our problem-solving pages thoroughly and give your pet his or her own second chance with their first family.
