Introduction:
All right, I have to admit it, I’m greedy. I am now used to averaging 50-80 people at our monthly meetings and our 12 September meeting only had 27 hardy souls attend. No excuse that about 15 people called to apologize for not coming along, barely able to breathe without choking from bronchitis, or that the weather was just awful, or that we had so many members join in on our bachelor auction two nights before, or that there were about 20 social activities going on during this week and people were “evented-out”! Well, we SCAA directors are just greedy, and our monthly meetings remain our primary source of funding! Seriously, no attendance at meetings, no ability to continue SCAA’s rescuing and medical care activities long-term.
With this in mind, please please try to attend our wonderful Senses Wine Lounge Dog Day (although we’ll have cats there for adoption too!)…they are offering a fantastic deal at RMB 88 for all you can eat BBQ and buffet plus one drink, or even better, RMB 288 for the same food plus unlimited champagne and cocktails. It’s from 10am-4pm, so that’s a lot of cocktails and wagging tails!
And our next meeting is 24 October, so cement this date in your calendar now and let’s make it our highest attendance ever!
Our bachelor auction at Monsoon, Pier One was simply fantastic and we have graphic designer extraordinaire and organizer Marianne Kaulima to thank for this huge success. SCAA netted 42,000 (!!) which will cover a good deal of veterinary care over the next few months. See SCAA news below for more details, but deepest thanks to all our sponsors, restaurants, volunteers, bidders and some very brave and generous bachelors. To see the G-rated photos of the event, click here to link to the SCAA website.
With the return of expatriates and the new school season, we’re thrilled to announce many new P.R. materials that are available for school projects, fundraising events and for you to distribute everywhere you can think of! We have a new brochure, our 2007 calendar, t-shirts, posters and a new online store….see our News Update below for details and feel free to contact director@scaashanghai.org to request these materials/products to distribute and sell!
We are busy planning many fun fundraising events for the next three months so be sure to read the newsletters, check our website events calendar and come to our monthly meetings to find out how to attend, participate and volunteer. We are starting now to seek raffle prizes for our 12 December gala holiday party; we are hoping to offer more than 100 great prizes, so please keep this in mind as you talk to venders, restaurant managers, beauticians, etc.!!
As the weather gets colder, we’ll start to hold our adoption days indoors at O’Malley’s, but it’s quite cozy upstairs as we new and old friends meet, enjoy pub comfort food, warm drinks and work together to adopt out our beloved foster animals. Winter may be approaching, but abandoned animals don’t stop with the cold (and for some reason, Shanghai animals seem to mate year round…), so we can never be complacent with our efforts, fundraising and love. Happy autumn all and thank you so much for your ongoing support. Without you, SCAA cannot survive.
With warmest regards,
Carol Wolfson

News Update
- Bachelor Auction Huge Success
Our 10 September bachelor auction on Pier 1, Monsoon was a huge success. 110 people (not including journalists, bachelors and volunteers) attended and as the night wore on, more bachelors clothing came off and bids went high! M.C. Cathrene Tarukwasha, Marketing Manager of asiaXPAT, did an amazing job of stirring up the crowd, bachelor performances (including a Frank Sinatra croon, Elvis, Mandarin singing, body lifting, and some very shy self-testimonials!), and bids! SCAA netted approximately RMB 42,000 from the evening which is simply amazing and we are extremely grateful to organizer Marianne Kaulima for organizing the event start to successful finish. Thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors including Solid Vodka, asiaXPAT.com, M on the Bund, Laris, Senses Wine Lounge, Indian Vintage, O’Malleys, Zapata’s, The Hilton’s Leonardo, Indalo, Freelance, 239, A Future Perfect, Azul and Aegean restaurants. Same time next year?!

- New SCAA Hotline
To decrease the exhaustion and continuous burden on our 5 SCAA directors, we have now introduced an SCAA hotline number: 13918552425. We have taken individual phone numbers off the website, brochure and all P.R. materials. All calls should be directed to the hotline which the directors will share for a few weeks each. All directors can still be written emails directly about areas they specialize in (see contact us) on the SCAA website for details.
- SCAA Online Store to Launch!
We are very excited to announce working with Henrique Valle of Yangma Advertising/Shanghai Expat, to set up an online shop for SCAA. Now you will be able to click on a link from our SCAA website to an online shop and buy SCAA products one at a time (which allows us to sell without keeping inventory!). Along with our regular t-shirts and the 2007 calendar, you can choose a t-shirt that will be printed with YOUR OWN PET’S PHOTO!!). The site should be upon within a couple of weeks, so check it out. The hosting company will take a commission but they are generously offering SCAA the majority of profits from each sale…so you will truly be shopping and supporting SCAA!
- Volunteers Needed for Informational Events
More and more, SCAA is being asked to participate in expatriate school events and vendor booths. We need volunteers to help us so that the directors (who are already extremely busy on the animal operation side of SCAA) do not have to go to all these events as well. You would be responsible for talking about SCAA, handing out our brochure, selling our products and getting people interested (signed up) for our website newsletter, volunteering, fostering and adopting. If you are interested, please contact director2@scaashanghai.org or call the hotline. Also, please mention if you are available for nighttime or daytime functions. We also need more bilingual volunteers for local events we are starting to get involved with…this primarily involves speaking about SCAA and distributing Chinese language pet care information, plus selling SCAA products. If you are interested, please contact Frenny Wang at 13381603107 or write to scaachineselanguage@scaashanghai.org
- More Foster Parents Needed
We simply are in more need of foster parents! In the last week alone, we have had 10 calls about abandoned animals from people who sincerely want to help but cannot keep the animals themselves. We never want to have to say no (and thus, many of the directors and a few dedicated foster parents often are taking in 3-8 animals each, scrambling to find ways to isolate the animals from each other and their own pets), but sometimes we must if we do not have the fostering resources available.
Example: A man called from an apartment complex last week to say he had seen a lovely dog running around abandoned for the last month. He had been feeding it but no one claimed it. He was moving and had two dogs of his own but could not bear to leave the dog behind. We agreed if he could catch the dog and get him to PAW, we would find a foster home. Beautiful Blake is now with dog foster care director Jaycee Koo, who has her own pet dog and NOW two unweaned puppies as well. SCAA Board member Christine Hsieh, with two adopted cats (and usually several foster kittens) found a dog and four puppies in her apartment yard area this past week. She had been feeding the mother to keep her and the puppies healthy but now many neighbors were coming around to look and Christine was worried about their safety. Indeed, so many neighbors were coming around that the dog got defensive and barked all night long to the point where the neighbors called the police to pick up the dog/puppies. Christine took off of work to defend the dog/puppies from 20 neighbors until we were able to organize to pick up the four puppies…two are now with Jaycee and two are with another amazing foster dog mom, Susie Klein (well done Christine!). Unfortunately, the scared mother dog ran away but we are hoping she comes back so we can get her an exam/vaccination and foster her.
While all of this has been going on, we have received five calls in the last three days about abandoned kittens. One lady is only in Shanghai for a week but still managed to find a tiny kitten and our number; she is taking the kitten to PAW and then we need to foster it as well as 5-8 other kittens recently found (unfortunately, another 3 kittens died before we could foster them…these tiny ones with their eyes closed have a very high mortality rate….but those finding the kittens, even if dying, have still called to say they felt much better knowing SCAA is here to help them try to save a life….)
And, with the October holidays approaching (as will be the case for Christmas and Chinese New Year), many of our foster parents will need people to take care of their wards while they travel.
So please, if you are able to foster, even if only for a few days, please call the hotline or contact Lee-Anne Armstrong at foster@scaashanghai.org
- New SCAA Brochures/Posters/Calendars Available!
SCAA’s 2007 Calendar is now available (you can buy the calendar at our meetings, events and soon on the online shop). Our deepest thanks to Junie Tong and Harry Wong for donating the printing costs! Also thanks once again to Marianne Kaulima for donating the design of the calendar, brochure and advertising! And great thanks as well to Mr. Chen of Garden Bookstore for donating the printing of 4,000 of our new brochure. We need volunteers to distribute our brochure in every expatriate public venue you believe would attract new volunteers/donations, as well as to sell the calendar (your next coffee morning, students in school projects, your workplace, etc.!). We also have fantastic SCAA posters donated by Alec Chua of Newport Real Estate that can be displayed. If you want to collect any of these materials to purchase, sell or distribute, call the SCAA hotline or write to director2@scaashanghai.org.

Project Updates
- Foster Care Focus Enough for Now!
We’d like to tell our members that although we are between supporting a large, local project, we have more than enough on our plate supporting abandoned animal phone calls! Because we now have fewer Baoshan animals, it allows us to accept more expatriate phone calls asking us for assistance…in reality, we have just switched logistics…we are saving just as many animals but simply in a different way. The potential project of 150 cats with a Mr. Wong has been post-poned as he currently lives 2.5 hours away; he is said to have to move in November and once he is closer to Shanghai, we will visit and inspect the premises and cats. Ms. Luo, the lady with 74 cats which we vaccinated last year has asked us to do so again (cost about RMB 4,000+) so Dr. James Holder and Carol Wolfson will visit the apartment in October to see what has happened in the past year. The Baoshan management has called and asked us to return but have not agreed to make any changes at all, so we will not consider returning to this project. It is quite easy for people to say we should seek a new project, but without more foster parents, we cannot expand our operations, so those who wish us to do this, please step up to the plate and foster first!
- New Pet Hotel/Hospital Visit Still Delayed
Due to an extremely busy work schedule (no doubt many are SCAA patients!); James Holder has not had the opportunity to visit the new pet hotel and various new “hospitals” with us. We hope to do so in October and certainly before the holidays so that our members have more boarding options when they travel
