Introduction:

What a hectic month of activities it has been! To start with, although there is supposed to be a breeding season for kittens/puppies, this apparently doesn’t apply to Shanghai. We continue to receive call after call about abandoned little ones, not yet weaned, both found abandoned by the parents in parks/alleys or by pet store/market vendors who are dumping them in the trash. Out of the blue we have many new foster parents as well, ready and waiting to bottle feed so this has been a true blessing (and quite a relief!) to SCAA and we directors all want to personally thank you for your time, devotion and love. So many close calls, so many that don’t make it, but more than in the past, we have teeny little ones that are surviving because of our dedicated foster parents. Bravo and bless you, and may you soon get some sleep!

There are several major thank-you’s in order:

  • Maria Gilsenan: Our wonderful SCAA member who arranged for us to be able to sell our Holiday Party Grand Prize Motorbike & Sidecar at the 14/15 October Asian Gaelic Games. We sold almost 100 tickets which is a fantastic start! Maria is also organizing support for our upcoming 18 November Quiz Night at the Dublin Exchange….this is a first for SCAA so many thanks Maria, and also to Brendan Brophy, Manager of the Dublin Exchange. Finally, a fundraising event in Pudong!
  • Kate McFarlin: Kate organized the AWC Halloween Ball at Kathleen’s 5 on 28 October, which was a great success. The results to be donated are still to be tallied but we’d like to thank Kate for supporting SCAA as the recipient of the night’s proceeds.
  • Beth Lennon and Michael Beets: These very dedicated foster parents also have their own production company called Nice Shot Productions. They have worked like maniacs to produce a short documentary about SCAA, which will be launched at the SCAA Holiday Party on 12 December. The documentary was completely their idea to make SCAA more visible via the internet and I am completely indebted to them for making this dvd a reality.
  • Marianne Kaulima: Our new SCAA Marketing & Promotions director continues to exhaust herself pro bono on SCAA’s behalf, designing every card, poster, ad layout, invitation and graphic need we have.
  • Miton Menefee: Milton has worked far beyond the call of duty to create the new website format that has been desperately needed for awhile now. So much has happened within SCAA that there is simply too much information on the website homepage, and we needed to simplify the information so that we can direct callers to first “Read the Website” (Our New SCAA Mantra!) so that our policies and requirements are very clear for every different animal situation/issue. It looks straightforward but it’s a massive undertaking and Milton has been working on these changes more than full-time. However, as we all know, feeding him Sue Ferry’s chocolate chip cookies at every meeting has sustained him through this new challenge!

November will be yet again another busy month. Be sure to join us for the free dog portrait day at Freelance on 12 November, 12-4pm. This is a really great chance to bring your pet dog (adopted, your own pet, non-members’ pets all welcome!) for a free professional portrait and LuShan Framing & Interiors will donate framing for free. The portraits can then be picked up at the SCAA Gala Holiday Party (our bribe to make sure you join us for this fantastic event) or future SCAA events.

17 November is the opening of a new LuShan Framing & Interior Store and I’d like to invite all SCAA members to join us from 2-9pm for free food, live music, bubbly and drinks! SCAA calendars, t-shirts and other products will be available for purchase. And, on 18 November is our first ever quiz night at the Dublin Exchange, so please let us know if you can put together a team of 4-6 people…we need to fill up the pub! Great raffle prizes on the night too.

We are planning the most successful, exciting SCAA Gala Holiday Event ever for 12 December at Zapata’s, 6:30pm onwards. The Grand Prize for the evening is a CI 750 motorbike with sidecar which is a separate raffle than the party raffle. Tickets can be purchased at Zapata’s, Sasha’s, O’Malley’s, Freelance, Senses Wine Lounge and Indian Vintage. If you can sell tickets, also let us know. The winner doesn’t have to be at the Xmas party to be eligible and AGS Fourwinds is donating free shipping overseas (many thanks to Keith Ellis for this!)! The bike will be displayed outside of Sasha’s until the event, and I have a parking space to keep the bike after the event if the winner cannot take immediate possession.

For the Gala Holiday Party itself, we have over 100 amazing prizes (see details and list here!). The regular RMB 100 entrance fee will provide one free raffle ticket and extra ones all night long will be RMB 25 each or 5 for RMB 100.

The party will also launch a very moving dvd about SCAA, created pro bono by SCAA foster parents Beth Lennon and Michael Beets, owners of Nice Shot Productions. It’s a ten-minute documentary about what SCAA does and why what we do is important. I’ve watched the rough draft a few times and still cry with each viewing. Our goal is 120 or more people at the party, so be sure to invite everyone you know….let’s end 2006 with an amazing fundraiser so we have sufficient funds to expand the number of animals we can help in 2007. We are hoping that we can hit the 300 mark of animals successfully healed and adopted by the end of this year! If we count the animals in foster care, we are well over 350!

And, of course, see you all at the 14 November meeting! Keep sending those videos!

Finally, with the holiday season soon upon us and many foster parents traveling, we need more volunteers who can help out with temporary fostering over the holidays…even if only for a few days, this could be a huge help when we are trying desperately to juggle animals all over Shanghai. Please contact foster care director Lee-Anne Armstrong if you can help us through the December and Chinese New Year holiday period. (foster@scaashanghai.org)

With warmest regards,

Carol Wolfson
Founder/Executive Director, SCAA

News Update

  • CI 750 Motorbike W/Sidecar SCAA Gala Party Grand Prize at Sasha’s…BUY/SELL TICKETS NOW! On 12 December, we will have a raffle for over 100 great prizes and the ultimate grand prize of a reproduction CI750 motorbike with side care. You can read all about the bike here. Tickets are on sale at Zapata’s, Sasha’s, O’Malley’s, Senses Wine Lounge, Indian Vintage and Freelance at RMB 100 each or 12 for RMB 1,000. You don’t have to be at the drawing for the grand prize and AGS Fourwinds is donating free shipping overseas (this does not include import/export and custom’s fee). The license isn’t included, but not everyone will want to use the bike while in Shanghai, and it can be shipped or sold. There is also an available parking space for one month if the winner needs time to find a place to keep the bike! If you are available to help sell tickets, please call the SCAA hotline at 13918552425.

  • New Website Format Launched: As you may have noticed recently, there has been an overload of information on our website. SCAA has grown and developed so much in the past year that the website also needed to be better organized. We thank Milton Menefee for taking on this huge task. It’s still a work in progress, but the format now is much cleaner and many part of the website are archived…easy to find but no longer cluttering up the home page. One main priority was to easily find the information for the five questions we are contacted the most by phone/email: Now it will be easier for all of us to say, including our members, when asked about finding an animal, fostering, adoption, volunteering or donating, “Please read the website”. Each of these topics have been labeled onto a paw pad at the top of the website…hopefully, easy to find and easy to understand! Frequently updated sections are highlighted in sections on the home page and on the red menu. Now our members can easily scan for new items. The new site is still in testing so please report website problems to milton@mediakungfu.com
    http://scaashanghai.org/

  • Website Hall of Shame Created: We are in the process of creating a section on the website that describes some of the more difficult situations our directors and members have had to deal with in recent months. The purpose is both educational (as SCAA is still a relatively new organization, we still often have to change or add new procedures/protocols to deal with new issues and situations we face) and hopefully also enlightening about the frustrations and sometimes hurtful incidents SCAA management encounters. We also hope it will circumvent such situations in the future if people can read and learn what SCAA does, and does not do. Hall of Shame

  • SCAA MTO123.com Online Store Launches: Many thanks to Henrique Valle, head of MTO123 online store!! You can now order online off our SCAA website t-shirts and hoodies, either with just the SCAA logo OR custom-made with your own pets photo (or whatever photo you want!). Production takes just a day or two and the product will be delivered to your home. Plus, the store will donate a significant amount of each purchase to SCAA…shop and support our furry friends in need!! Be sure to tell all your friends and family too.

  • SCAA Hotline a Major Success: SCAA directors are not sure this a happy or sad occurrence, but the SCAA hotline has taken off big time! It’s fantastic as individual directors are receiving fewer phone calls, but sad for the director responsible for the hot line. We average between 10-30 calls each day, many from emotional or angry people wanting to dump animals with SCAA, and then a few that warm the heart from truly kind people wanting to make a difference or who have found animals but are willing to foster or help in their rescue. We urge our SCAA members to please tell anyone who asks you to help or asks for out hotline number, to PLEASE first read the website as this also saves time and energy for our directors manning the hotline phone service. If there are any brave volunteers who would like to assist with the hotline, please write to director@scaashanghai.org (or call the hotline!). We’d happily train a few more people to answer phone calls and decrease this burden on our directors who are already overwhelmed with animal rescue and foster operations.

Project Updates

  • Pet Hotel/Hospital Visit: Without naming names (must be careful of libel), Dr. James Holder and Carol Wolfson visited a relatively new pet hotel in the Gubei area and a veterinary clinic/hospital to see if there are boarding facilities we can recommend. Alas, we cannot. The one pet store/vet/boarding facility did not even have water in the dogs’ pens in order that they urinate less (they take the dogs outside to a fenced-in area to give them water and wait for them to urinate and then put them back inside…). The actual boarding areas are built out of wood which is a fantastic breeding area for bacteria/viruses. The hospital we went to see does not have boarding facilities and the prices for the vet care were extremely high, making us wonder why people think PAW is expensive. PAW is certainly competitive with the other overseas’ vet clinics and often ends up cheaper we find when people first take their animals to cheaper local “vets” and end up coming to PAW when the job is botched up and the animal is sicker than when it went in. Ultimately, at this time, we will continue to only recommend PAW and Pets Home for boarding. If any of our members find a good place to board animals, please let us know!

  • Baoshan Mr. Wong 150+ cats now in Baoshan: This is not the same Baoshan facility we supported in the past. Mr. Wong is a hoarder with over 150 cats who lived over four hours away from Shanghai. His rent/supplies are paid by an SCAA member who is from Shanghai but now lives in Boston. She has donated RMB 9,000 to pay his first six months rent to move to the Baoshan area (his apt. in the countryside was being torn down) plus RMB 2,500 for supplies. Once he has moved into the Baoshan place permanently, James Holder and Carol Wolfson will inspect the project to see if it meets SCAA’s requirements. We’d very much like to have a project to support, but since we terminated Baoshan, there has been no project that will agree to SCAA’s terms and conditions (which you can read about on the website). Stay tuned.

  • Catch & Release Projects Beginning: One of our SCAA members has received approval from her local community management to attempt to catch stray alley cats and bring them to PAW for neutering, then release (although if there are very tame ones, we can consider fostering if we have available foster homes). We have not yet started this project and we need to discuss the methods for carrying out this type of spay/neuter project with PAW as it entails dealing with semi-feral animals, possibly unhealthy animals, etc. We will soon have a protocol to report to you!

  • SCIS 5th Graders Fundraising Starting Strong: Wow! Talk about full speed ahead! Mikey McKillip’s and Alyssa Hendrickson’s fifth graders at SCIS have already sold 50 calendars (within one week) and have taken 150 more to sell! They have created a poster campaign and although their original goal was to raise RMB 5,000, they have set a new goal of RMB 10,000 before the end of the school year. We are so proud and grateful to you all and we look forward to displaying your photography and reports on our SCAA website! You can also see their volunteers at our adoption days in their green SCIS t-shirts. Well done and bravo!

Thought for the Month:

From U.S. Director Cat Brandell:

God and dog On the first day of creation, God created the dog.

On the second day, God created man to serve the dog.

On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth (especially the horse) to serve as potential food for the dog.

On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labor for the good of the dog.

On the fifth day, God created the tennis ball so that the dog might or might not retrieve it.

On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the dog healthy and the man broke.

On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but He had to walk the dog.

And, to end this month's newsletter, some of our precious teeny ones:
