Introduction:

Where to begin?!

We are absolutely thrilled and honored to receive recognition of Association by the UK RSPCA. I received notification from Mr. Paul Littlefair, International Director for the RSPCA, after our May meeting (he meant to make the announcement during his short speech to all of us, but that horrid microphone kept breaking down so he decided to wait until after the meeting). Further explanation of the process can be read in the SCAA News section, but in a nutshell, this provides SCAA with the ability to say the RSPCA approves of what we are doing and our plans for the future. It’s a major step forward for SCAA within a very short time of our establishment, and it is an accomplishment that all involved with SCAA can be very proud of!! Well done to everyone!
We were equally honored to have Paul and Ms. Grace Gabriel, Asia Regional Director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) at our 23 May monthly meeting. They were visiting for a training program carried out with Roots & Shoots and were kind enough to attend both our Dog Day on 21 May and our meeting. We are in discussion with them about what we can do together, independently and with Roots & Shoots in the coming year to progress animal welfare education in Shanghai and projects that promote animal protection, compassion and the need for the creation of animal welfare laws in China.
On a side note, the CRAP awards at our 23 May meeting were great fun and were enjoyed by all (we hope!). We also raised more than RMB 8,000 on the night with an attendance of over 100 people, so thank you everyone for coming and making the night very special indeed!
I am more than thrilled to announce that Baoshan is actually moving! It’s taken a year of begging, cajoling and downright threatening to cease assisting them, but the factory is moving to a far better location and the Baoshan factory owner is actually building a new cattery section and small dog kennels from scratch. We are grateful to Jack Brandell for the initial design provided to Baoshan (and we are still holding our breath about how close they keep to the design). Dr. James Holder came along with us recently to inspect the building to date (the cattery thus far) and we were all impressed that they have actually listened to us in most respects (to ask for complete adherence to our standards we know is impossible!). The owner of Baoshan actually chose a new location where he could rent this small piece of land just for the animals’ facility, and it is adjacent to both a small lake and pedestrian park where the dogs can be walked amid greenery. Most important of all is that there is an isolation room for sick and new animals now (a first in Shanghai!) which is a huge step forward in being able to monitor and isolate newly dumped animals or those that get sick (and new mothers with kittens/puppies!). We are also creating a book with photos/ histories of each animal to be better able to track the individual animals for possible fostering/adoption. Baoshan will be moving within the next month and we are all excited about visiting the new location, which will also be lovely to bring school groups for visits as there can be picnics in the park, fishing (we are told…) and a better feeling for the welfare of the Baoshan animals in general. Come visit with us soon!
Recent fundraising events have been numerous (but never enough) and festive! On 12 May, I Love Shanghai Lounge hosted a night of special shots for SCAA and donated RMB 2,850. On 20 May, Flora Clyde bought a table for SCAA at Shanghai Racquet Club Community Event and thanks as well to Lindy Su McCullum for manning our SCAA table and raising RMB 610 (too hot for most people to come out and play!). And on 21 May, we had a fantastic Dog Day at Senses Wine Lounge, full of our adopted rescued dogs, member pets and Senses Patrons and pets! The food and wine were flowing with about 60 people and doggies running about throughout the day. Owner Matthew Ryan personally donated RMB 2,000 at the end of the day and we raised another RMB 2,125 in donations! We must not have completely destroyed the premises as Mat mentioned after the fact that he would like to host similar events every two months for SCAA….if you didn’t make it to this first Dog Day be sure to join us in the future!
We’ve reached over 8,000 unique hits on our website this month (up from 4,800 last month) which is simply amazing!! Now if only all 8,000 people would hit that PayPal button and donate, we’d be well funded…make sure to urge everyone you know worldwide to donate for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. etc.!!
Finally, if you are in Shanghai over the summer, PLEASE be sure to come to our monthly meetings and bring along everyone you know! The summer months tend to be slow and yet we continue to rely primarily on the funds raised from our Zapata meetings to fund our animal medical and support expenses, which DO NOT go down over the summer (they in fact increase substantially with the overwhelming number of abandoned kittens we have to deal with).

So please attend, volunteer, foster and donate!!

Wishing you all a healthy and cool summer in Shanghai or wherever you may be traveling. Meow/ruff!

Warmest regards,

Carol Wolfson
Founder/Executive Director

News Update

  • ASCAA receives UK RSPCA Association:
SCAA has been awarded the level of Association with RSPCA International. According to the RSPCA: “The RSPCA is the world’s oldest animal welfare society, founded in 1824 to promote kindness and prevent cruelty to animals in England and Wales. The RSPCA Overseas Fund was established in 1934 to help promote these aims worldwide.
The Association Scheme offers a formal link between RSPCA International and animal welfare organisations operating outside England & Wales who share this aim…It is designed to assist with the development of animal welfare activity in other countries through the provision of RSPCA recognition, information and advice; and the opportunity to learn of other organisations’ work worldwide, to establish contact and share experiences.

Association status is awarded at one of three levels, reflecting the development and activity level of an organisation. The status is conferred for a five year period before review, during which an organisation is expected to follow similar policies to the RSPCA. There are over 220 members of the Association Scheme in 65 countries.

Association status is awarded at one of three levels, reflecting the age, development and activity level of an organisation… Once an organisation has been accepted at one of the levels, it can apply to move to a higher level after a period of 12 months.”

SCAA has been recognized at the Level 1 Association which meets the following criteria (Designed for newly established organisations, of at least 12 months):
    • Have agreed policies on issues of concern to the organisation
    • Have set out clear aims
    • Have started activities to meet with its aims
    • Have established a Managing Committee/Board of Trustees
    • Have a written Constitution/Memorandum of Association
    • Have set up and started to implement a system to keep records of income and expenditure
    • Have begun to make contacts with other animal welfare organisations and local authorities
Our next goal is Level 2 Association after two years in operation with an established service infrastructure!
    • Be actively involved in one or more animal welfare activities (e.g. shelter, neutering, campaigning, etc.)
    • Have produced written information about its services
    • Have produced written information about animal welfare (eg re-homing/pet care/wild animals)
    • The Management Committee (or equivalent) meets regularly
    • Have produced a yearly plan with targets for its activities
    • Keeps records of income and expenditure, certified according to national legal requirements or approved by an Auditing Committee
    • Set a yearly budget for its activities
    • Have regular contact with other relevant organisations

SCAA is well on its way toward Level 2 of Association with the RSPCA (primarily still needing to produce a yearly plan and budget, set up an auditing committee and become even more involved with suitable animal welfare projects in Shanghai, etc.).
We will be able to use the RSPCA logo on our website which is a testimony of how far SCAA has come in only 14 months of existence. Well done all!

  • New SCAA Foster Care Director Named:

With the loss of our wonderful Foster Care Director Mary Sewell, we are now equally pleased to announce the appointment of SCAA’s new Foster Care Director, Lee-Anne Armstrong. Already a long-time SCAA foster parent of wayward kittens, Lee-Anne immediately stepped up to the plate and has not missed a beat in carrying out our ever-increasing foster care duties, especially now with kitten season upon us. Thank you so much Lee-Anne for taking on this new role with SCAA!

  • New Third Party Adoption Guidelines Implemented:

We have increasingly been contacted by non-foster parents who have found abandoned animals (mostly kittens at the moment) who simply want to dump the animals with us and be done with any responsibility for the welfare of the animal. This, and more people leaving Shanghai who want us to help them re-home their pet. Every time we assist someone who is not a SCAA foster parent, we lose an opportunity to re-home one of our own wards that foster parents have spent time, funds, effort and love on, not to mention the medical expenses we incur with each animal. Due to our lack of enough foster parents and increasing medical costs when people want to simply leave animals with us, it has become necessary to create strict guidelines for third party adoptions (ie. People who are not SCAA foster parents!) which can be viewed on our website http://scaashanghai.org/third_party_adoption.html. The explanation is rather blunt, but then so are many of the people who call us who want instant solutions to getting rid of animals they find but do not want to take on any responsibility in assisting us. We continually have to explain that we are NOT a shelter, nor an SPCA and that we too are extremely busy, all volunteers and are dependent on donations for SCAA to survive and continue our rescue/healing/foster care/adoption work! Ultimately, we say that if you find an animal, it’s yours…we can help with medical care discounts, courtesy of PAW vet clinic, and in time find foster homes (no guarantee) and adopters, but the person contacting us must also take responsibility in assisting us by paying for the animal’s medical costs, attending adoption days with a small fee and donating funds if the animal is adopted (our own fostered animals must be our priority!). We quickly find out if a person is sincere about saving an animal depending on how they respond to these guidelines, but as always, we handle every rescue animal on a case-by-case basis and THEIR welfare is always our main concern; we will do whatever we can to save every animal we can, but we need to make people aware that they too bear a responsibility for the welfare of abandoned animals in Shanghai!

  • New import/export/testing transport services by AGS Fourwinds:

Keith Ellis, General Manager of AGS Fourwinds Relocation, announced at our 23 May meeting that they are expanding their pet relocation department and will have a special representative to handle these services, including transport of blood for testing to Europe, the U.S., etc. Keith has always been a dedicated supporter of SCAA and we remain extremely grateful for his company’s continued sponsorship of our weekly van (now 5 times/month including a van for the Garden Bookstore Flea market, the last Saturday of every month which is now also an additional SCAA adoption day!). Without this van, we could not visit our supported projects or transport our rescued animals. For more information about import/export regulations, and all issues related to your pet’s relocation, feel free to contact Keith directly at 13761602268, or keith.ellis@agsfourwinds.com.

Project Updates

  • Baoshan: The move to Baoshan is outlined in the Introduction to this newsletter. We expect the move to the new premises to take place before the end of June. The Baoshan management has promised to adhere to our policies of not allowing hoarders to dump animals at Baoshan. (these are usually the little old village ladies who volunteer each week and bring one or two of their own rescued animals to Baoshan knowing we’ll take on the responsibility of medical care and adoption; we clear out a few and we suddenly find 10 more dumped in…). They have promised to stick to a capacity level of animals in/animals out (i.e. if we tell them there is a maximum of 40 cats at one time, then when we foster/adopt out down to 37, they can put in 3 more animals, using isolation guidelines, spay/neuter and euthanasia for sick animals). We have been working with (or rather, on) Baoshan management for the last year, so we know what their empty promises usually are, but nonetheless they have come a long way about understanding what a manageable project needs to be (this is far from a shelter, as it remains a private facility and it’s rather hard for outsiders to dump animals, thank goodness!). Stay tuned for news on the move, and do come and visit; hopefully, Baoshan will become a model of what a small, private facility, with security that does not allow accessible dumping, can be in Shanghai…we have provided medical care, funding and the adoption of over 140 of Baoshan’s animals in the last year, one at a time…so even a small project can make a huge difference if managed properly.

  • 300+ Cat Hoarder Moving: SCAA member Uli Weber has notified us that a local couple who have hoarded over 300 cats have finally found a new place to move somewhere in the countryside outside Shanghai where the cats will be contained and neighbors not continually upset and offended by the coming and going of feral cats. We have been asked to assist this “project” but we will wait until after they move to visit and assess the situation and willingness of this couple to adhere to our guidelines for spay/neuter, euthanasia, general hygiene and animal welfare and willingness to adopt out the cats. It’s a huge project and SCAA has very limited funding so we are not sure what, if anything, we can do to assist. Stay tuned for updates.

  • 100+ Cat Hoarder Hoping to Move: Another SCAA member who has moved overseas, originally from Shanghai, has been supporting a local man who has kept over 100 cats in a tiny apartment. She is funding his rent and has given SCAA money to give to him after he too moves to a countryside dwelling where his cats will be safer from angry neighbors and those stealing cats for the fur/food trade. We will again wait to see where he moves and if/now SCAA can assist.

Animal Thought for the Month (and a human one too!):

GOOD ADVICE

If a dog was the teacher you would learn stuff like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.

Let others know when they've invaded your territory.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout..! run right back and make friends.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

And for those of us who need to laugh a bit more, from SCAA founder’s mother, Beverly Wolfson:

Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

* Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.
* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
* Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
* Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
* Never buy a car you can't push.
* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.
* Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.
* Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
* The second mouse gets the cheese.
* When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane. * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.
* You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.
* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
* We could learn a lot from crayons . . . Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
*A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
