Introduction:
I am proud to announce that we have reached our 2006 goal of over 300 healthy animals rescued, healed and adopted out! Congratulations to all of us. We are not in the numbers game as every individual animal is precious, but it is a sign that SCAA's foster system is successful and expanding. At the end of 2005, we had fewer than 30 foster families and only 25 animals in foster care. Now, we have over 60 active foster families with 49 animals in foster care. I would personally love to see more than 100 foster families secured for SCAA in 2007; so spread the SCAA message to everyone you know!
We also had more than 22,000 unique visitors come to our website with over half the hits here in China and the rest throughout the world, looking to SCAA for information about their upcoming moves to Shanghai with their pets and to learn more about animal welfare issues here. It is another indication that SCAA is increasingly considered as the pioneer in responsible pet rescue, foster care management and general companion-animal welfare knowledge in Shanghai.
Our fundraisers in November/December were extremely successful and I'd like to extend our profuse gratitude to a few people who made these events possible:
- 12 November Dog Day: Lance Haggard, owner of Freelance Restaurant (who also won the raffle grand prize of a Chiang Jiang motorbike and sidecar...and NO, he did not bribe me to win...if I was going to fix the raffle, my husband would be driving the bike now!). Special thanks to Sharon Lovell who donated her time and profound talent to take amazing pet and owner portraits and who also photographed the Xmas party . Thanks also to Sonny Gao and Xiao Wei of LuShan Framing & Interiors who donated the framing.
- 18 November Quiz Night: Despite horrid weather which caused a blackout at the Dublin Exchange and a forced, quick move to the Blarney Stone, it was a fantastic night, raising RMB 6,680. Thanks to Dublin Exchange Manager Brendan Brophy (who ended up with 60+ uncooked meals), Dave and Paul from the Blarney Stone (who came up with 60+ cooked meals in a blink of an eye), to the Irish Consulate for donating fine first prizes of Jameson Irish Whiskey, and to Maria Gilsenan and Susan McIlroy, for raising funds through raffle ticket sales.
- 9 December Clara Love & Ciococo Holiday Bazaar: Our wonderful member Clara Love, creator of Halo Design jewelry, held a holiday bazaar with the beautiful boutique Cocoon & Ciococo and donated RMB 3,000 from sales profits to SCAA. Thank you so much!
- 12 December Holiday Party: Please see the video here. Special thanks to all our sponsors and truly special thanks to Thomas Stavonhagen, Justin, Tony and colleagues of id creations (www.idcreations.com.cn) for coming to the rescue at the last minute and very generously donating the filming and production of a short DVD about the Xmas party for use on our website and as a special gift to our U.S. Director Cat Brandell who has relocated to the U.S.
- Finally, we would all like to thank Jeff He and Angela Qi from the Beijing office of the International Fund for Animal Welfare for coming to share their insights about the current dog policy in Beijing. I am in constant awe of IFAW staff out there worldwide saving animals in horrible circumstances on a daily basis, and grateful that Jeff and Angela could spare their valuable time for us. Jeff also thanked SCAA for sharing our fundraising experience with them.
Talking about fundraising....wow!! Congratulations to the fifth graders of SCIS Pudong campus for raising RMB 10,030 through calendar sales and donations in less than four months....we should all be taking fundraising courses from you! (More in "News Update".)
On a sad note, we've lost a few babies recently whose immune systems were simply not strong enough to survive this winter weather despite their dedicated foster parents efforts. SCAA will launch a new website gallery in 2007 dedicated to these animals. Look for the new gallery "Little Ones We Lost", coming soon.
Please also keep a look out for SCAA member Chris Lomason's lost Siberian Husky Razor (you can see the lost notice on our website www.scaashanghai.org). One of our members sent a note to say that she had seen a new husky at a pet market she walks by and the Lomasons went to see, but it was not their beloved pet. Our hearts and prayers are with you and your family Chris.
Finally, thanks once again to all our amazing foster parents, especially those who have come through during this holiday season when we are frantically juggling animals while other foster parents deservedly go on vacation! If you are able to foster even for a few days during the next three weeks, please call me at 13817811443 or director@scaashanghai.org. We may not need you but it's good to know you are available!
Be sure to join our 23 January meeting as we hope to make it as festive and rewarding (lots more raffle prizes!) as our 12 December gala bash....help us start our 2007 fundraising with a full house at O'Malley's! SCAA has also grown so quickly that 2007 will also be the year in which we create a constitution, by-laws, yearly budget and project plans, etc....all to ensure the long-term sustainability of this amazing and unique organization in Shanghai, and possibly throughout China some day!
Wishing you all a happy, healthy and purrrrfect holiday season. See you in the new year!
Warmest regards,
Carol Wolfson

News Update
- Xmas Gala Fundraiser Huge Success!
Over RMB 32,000 net was raised and over 200 animal lovers attended our 2nd annual SCAA holiday party/fundraiser! Most of the night was spent hurriedly picking raffle numbers as there were well over 120 prizes: first prize of five nights in the Regency Club at the Bali Hyatt was won by our generous sponsor Keith Ellis of AGS Fourwinds and the grand prize of the Chiang Jiang motorbike and sidecar was won by Lance Haggard, owner of Freelance Restaurant (stop by and ask him for a ride!). Unfortunately, due to technical problems at Zapata's, we were unable to launch our very moving short documentary created by Beth Lennon and Michael Beets of Nice Shot Production, but it also gives us a chance for another great party on 23 January, so be sure to join us! We hope all had a great time at the party, and thanks to everyone for braving the nasty weather to support SCAA.
- IFAW Reports Change in Dog Crackdown in Beijing:
International Fund for Animal Welfare Beijing representatives Jeff He and Angela Qi joined the Xmas Gala party and kindly shared news that there is a change in dog catching activities by the Beijing police. After many internal and international discussions, it appears that there will be a back down in the number of dogs apprehended and a more humane way of holding dogs for collection by owners who need to pay for licenses and vaccinate their animals. Hopefully, this will all lead to more responsible pet ownership (it does remain up to owners to make their dogs legal, which is much cheaper in Beijing than in Shanghai, and to provide vaccinations and adequate medical care for their pets...education, education, education!) and more humane animal welfare policies at the government level. SCAA is in touch with various animal organizations and will keep our members informed of any new information/policies we discover in China and in Shanghai.
- Website Hall of Shame Addition: Unfortunately, we would like to share Topic Number Nine of our website's Hall of Shame.

Project Updates
- SCIS 5th Graders reach RMB 10,000 goal!
Congratulations and sincerest thanks to the 50 fifth graders from SCIS, along with teachers Mikey McKillip and Alyssa Hendrickson for using their fundraising talents with calendar sales and donations, to raise RMB 10,030 for SCAA. And all in less than four months! We look forward to meeting the students to thank them personally in 2007. Bravo!
- SSIS Homeroom Fundraising Project:
Senior High students from the Suzhou Singapore International School sold out 50 calendars in less than a week and are now preparing a project for 2007 which will include assigning specific fundraising sponsorship of animals to individual homerooms. We look forward to working with you!
- Local Projects Update:
We continually are looking for local projects to sponsor/assist/educate, but there continue to be none willing to meet our requirements (for more information, see "Projects Terms & Conditions" on the SCAA website). Dr. James Holder and Carol Wolfson will soon visit a hoarder with 150 cats that promises to adhere to our guidelines (we won't hold our breath). In 2006, we did agree to vaccinate the 74+ cat woman's cats as even though not living a happy life, they are all healthy and neutered. We will soon give some funding to the Cat King (a 90-year old man living with his 68-year old daughter in an old house in a distant Pudong village. He has over 150 cats and we have not been able to help him as probably 80% of the population is so sick that they all need to be euthanized before we can even attempt to heal a small population.) The Cat King refuses to let us assist properly so we have had to decline major assistance, but our hearts are still touched by this old man doing the best he can, so we will give him some donated cat food and some money to buy warm clothing, etc. We have refused 5 other hoarders as 4 just want us to give them money without any input at all and one of them refused to spay/neuter their cats. We will continue to seek new projects to support in 2007 but will focus even more on working with Roots & Shoots, in more than 130 schools, to educate children about pet care and animal welfare, as well as seek to work with the local government and possibly community groups wanting to spay/neuter their village pets.

SCAA Upcoming Fundraising Events
- 23 January: SCAA DVD Launch Party/Meeting:
Be sure to join us for this major event at O'Malley's, 6:30pm onwards. We plan an immediate follow-up to the Xmas gala party with this festive event! Along with the much-awaited launch of the SCAA documentary, we will also show the short DVD of the Xmas gala fundraiser, generously donated by id creations! There will be free SCAA tumblers for all, as well as over 50 great raffle gifts, again, plus all of the fun videos that we were not able to show at the 12 December party due to technical difficulties....help us start 2007 with a major ruff and meow!
- SCAA Happy Hours Planned:
Although our monthly meetings are great opportunities for our members to socialize each month, we have heard that many members would like the chance just to socialize (is this a hint that Carol Wolfson and Dr. James talk too much?!), so we are planning to start SCAA happy hours every two months...we are looking at some great venues that will provide both great deals to our members and donate a percentage of sales to SCAA. Stay tuned for our news about our first one planned for February!
