Introduction:
Our biggest and most serious news in a long time is that we have finally reached (more like highly exceeded) our foster care tipping point and there is no more room at the SCAA inn. We have over 80 cats and 15 dogs in foster care and we are maxed out, especially with summer approaching and us needing to juggle even those animals we already have due to current foster parents returning home or going on holiday ( if you can foster for even a few days over the summer holidays, please let us know foster@scaashanghai.org ). So please every one, this means NO MORE NEW FOSTER ANIMALS for the foreseeable future until we get our fostered animal numbers down. If you find a kitten or dog, do NOT call us; it’s yours, period. This must apply to our SCAA members and foster parents as well….we need time to get some of our long-term fostered cats and dogs adopted out before we take on any new rescues. It makes all of the directors very upset to have to refuse taking in any new animals (we average about 10 calls/day so we are also turning off the hotline….if you can foster or wish to adopt, or know someone who wants to do so, please send us an email!). So please don’t make us feel any worse!! Hopefully, we can get more animals adopted out (we just adopted out 9 kittens at the last adoption day) and we will review the situation monthly to start accepting new rescues as soon as possible again.
This does not mean that our fundraising events will be any fewer, though, as our medical costs remain high (average US$ 3,000/month now due to so many animals in foster care….). We have several fun events in June so be sure to read the SCAA Fundraising Event section!
Congratulations to all those involved with the kids’ art competition and my book launch fundraiser on 20 May. We raised a total of over RMB 30,000! See the SCAA News Update for all the details. And, if you have read the book (and have really nice things to say!), please go to my website www.carolwolfson.com and comment…..the more comments, the more attention and the more links to SCAA!
We would like to say a special thanks to four people/orgs!
- Concordia Junior Girl Scout Troop #16: The troop delighted us all with homemade cookies and brownies at our 13 May adoption day and raised RMB 625 for SCAA, 10 RMB at a time! (This is a great type of project for students to carry out as everyone loves baked goods…we certainly did! If any other organizations or school groups would like to do the same at any SCAA event, you are most welcome—she says greedily!)
- Nancy Tait: At the recent American Woman’s Club Charity Bazaar which benefited the wonderful organization Heart to Heart, Nancy Tait also set up a small booth to sell recycled art products to donate to SCAA. Although her profits were not huge, we nonetheless are grateful for the huge gesture and appreciate it so much whenever someone takes the time and effort to personally raise funds and donate to SCAA. Thanks so much Nancy.
- Chris Lomason & SAS 5th Graders: Our wonderful SCAA member and adopter Chris Lomason once again made small bean bag pillows which the Shanghai American School 5th Graders sold out in less than two weeks and raised an amazing RMB 10,000 for SCAA. This is quite overwhelming and shows what focused young people can do very quickly. We adults need to learn a lesson or two! Wow!!! Thanks so much Chris and all SAS 5th Graders!
- Carolyn Robertson: This is extraordinary! Carolyn, who adopted two kitties from SCAA long ago, Winifred and Ginger, chose to donate her entire profits (25% of the book profits shared each among the four authors) from the sale of “Six Shanghai Walks” to SCAA, and this has ended up in amounting to RMB 24,000!!! This is a fantastic book, but still a huge surprise nonetheless. Thank you so very much Carolyn.
Finally, we’d like to say a warm welcome and thank you to three SCAA members who have offered to take on more active operational positions: Lisa Dardarian, SCAA Adoption Day Coordinator; Jaye Williams, SCAA/PAW Coordinator; and Mary Sewell, who was SCAA’s first foster care director in the early days before moving with her family to Suzhou, will now become our Suzhou Coordinator (hopefully to attract more adopters, long-term and special needs foster care families, and donations, but again, no more rescue animals for the time being!….once a sucker, always a sucker Mary?!!).
Looking forward to seeing you all at our 3 June Dog Day/Adoption Day & Barbecue at the Pudong Moon River Diner and our 15 June Colabo Dog Friendly Gourmet Dinner w/live band! Have a safe and happy summer and let’s hope breeding season eases and lots of people adopt!
Purrfect regards,
Carol Wolfson

SCAA Adorable Adult Cats
Loyal, friendly, affectionate, playful, keeps feet warm in winter, fetches toys, purrs on eye contact…these are just some of the qualities you can find in SCAA’s great adult foster cats.
SCAA is giving our adult cats an opportunity to shine in our Newsletter. We’ll be regularly profiling an SCAA cat who would love to be someone’s pet – sometimes for the second time after being abandoned to SCAA.
Meet Lucky. Lucky is a lovable long-haired cat. Caring for his beautiful coat and keeping your house relatively hair-free means regular brushing – which he’s happy to sit still for. He’s 2.5 years old, neutered and vaccinated.
Lucky has earned his name – rescued after a minor car accident by kind animal lovers, he is now completely healed. He shows his gratitude for his second chance by following you around and making himself at home with you on the sofa and the bed – be prepared for some serious cuddling during the cold winter months. Lucky also enjoys sitting on you lap.

Dedicated foster parents Shannen and Matt would tell you that Lucky doesn’t know he’s a cat. He acts more like a person! He is very calm and so laid back, he lets his dominating cat foster brother pull whiskers off his face. We’d love to find Lucky a good permanent home before all his whiskers get pulled out!
Lucky gets along well with other cats, joining foster cats in a new space without any problems. For more information about adopting Lucky please contact foster@scaashanghai.org

News Update
- No new foster animals to be accepted for at least one month & hotline temporarily turned off: As posted on the SCAA website:
May 2007 Notice: SCAA cannot take any new stray and abandoned animals or pets into our foster care program. We have reached our foster animal limit with over 80 foster cats and kittens and 15 foster dogs.
The hotline service is also temporarily suspended.
Please see our tips for re-homing pets and recommendations for proper veterinary care for any animal you decide to rescue and re-home on your own. Sorry we can’t be of more help at this time.
If you want to foster or adopt an existing SCAA foster animal, we welcome your email!
We all feel awful about having to put a stop to taking in any new rescues for the foreseeable future but it’s not fair to our dedicated foster parents to keep taking in new kittens, or pets, while their own wards get older and more difficult to adopt out. Furthermore, many foster parents are doubling or tripling their numbers of fosters because we simply do not have enough foster parents for the numbers we are being asked to take in. We have continually made exceptions, one at a time, and this has added up to where many of us may well have 5-10 foster kittens/cats stashed in back bedrooms and bathrooms over the summer months. Every physical shelter has a limit before they have to start euthanizing animals. We do not have a shelter but we do have limits and we must simply say no for the welfare of the animals we already are committed to long-term. Hopefully we will soon be able to accept more rescues but for now, we simply must say no across the board; we cannot save every stray in Shanghai.
- Kids’ Art Competition/Book Launch Huge Success! We would like to thank everyone involved in the 20 May Glamour Bar fundraising day! The Kids’ Art Competition was a smashing success thanks to organizer SCAA director Emily Osann, lots of great volunteers, and our sponsors the Glamour Bar, Eno, SH, and Lushan Framing & Interiors. We received over 150 entries and it was very difficult to choose the top 20! The Silent Auction was a great success as well, attracting bidders throughout the later book launch and cocktail party with total bids reaching over RMB 4,000. Bravo all and we look forward to the next competition in 2008!

Carol Wolfson’s launch of her book The Last Pluck attracted nearly 200 participants, the majority of whom have either adopted from, fostered for or supported SCAA since it’s beginning in 2005. Deepest thanks to Marcus Ford and Edit Jablonsky who believed the event could be a great fundraising opportunity for SCAA and made it happen! Special thanks to grand raffle prize donor the new Hyatt on the Bund and Executive Assistant Manager, Peter Hildebrand for drawing the winning ticket (winner: Mary Howe). Books available at Garden Bookstore (325 Changele Lu), Lu-Shan Framing & Interiors (www.lu-shan.com) and from Carol’s website: www.carolwolfson.com .

Project Updates
- Mr. Wong 180+ cat update: The 180 cats in this project have now all been vaccinated twice and all male cats neutered (although many had been neutered, there were still over 50 non-neutered male cats—in a confined space with over 100 female cats, a very scary situation!). Hopefully this means there will be no new litters (unless they missed a male or two…). We are now preparing to work with generous sponsors B&Q to build a more interesting and exciting environment for the cats with indoor/outdoor climbing areas, wall cat beds, walkways among the rafters, etc.
We still need many, many cat toys to give these cats a more challenging and fun environment to live in. With over 180 cats, toys do not last long, so please donate! (Plus food and litter always welcome!). We may soon be able to bring visitors to this project, so if you would like to go during the summer, please contact director@scaashanghai.org . We will not start adopting out any of these cats until they are checked by Dr. James Holder, especially as we have so many foster animals to re-home first.
- Thanks to Jayne Fitton & Family! We are all extremely grateful to Jayne and her family (most of which have caught ringworm by now!) for continuing to care for and nurture the kittens taken out of Mr. Wong’s 180+ cat project over one month ago. Four of the kittens have already died and ALL are very sick with colds, mouth sores/virus, ringworm, etc. Jayne has been isolating all the kittens depending on levels of sickness and been providing 24 hour care as necessary. This is above and beyond the call of any SCAA dedication we could ask of any foster parent (plus she has foster dog Luki, and her own cats/dogs). Jayne and her family are going on a one-month vacation starting 25 June so we will need to re-home all of these kittens before this date. If you can assist in any capacity, please contract Lee-Anne Armstrong at foster@scaashanghai.org . Bless you Jayne!

Upcoming SCAA Community Events
-
Garden Bookstore starts up for summer; SCAA used clothing and shoe sale too! Good weather means the return of the Garden Bookstore flea markets (325 Changle Lu) on the last Saturday of every month. SCAA has a donated table for each event and we welcome volunteers 2-5pm (set up at 1pm). It's always a fun afternoon with great bargains and yummy food! We have started selling used clothing and shoes...if you are tired of clothes and shoes that you will never wear again (it's so hard to let go, we know) and they are in pristine condition, donate to SCAA and we will sell these items at the GBS flea market and at select adoption days. This is also a good chance to find something "new" and wonderful for your own wardrobe!! (We will collect at monthly meetings, adoption days and at GBS flea market!)
