Introduction:
A huge thank you to all our dedicated members for making our 23 January meeting and dvd launch party a fantastic success. I think I continue to be the most blubbering person when it comes to watching the moving SCAA documentary produced by Beth Lennon and Michael Beets of Nice Shot Productions. Apologies about that folks….all I have to do is hear the first three notes of music and the tears start falling!. If you haven’t seen the dvd yet, it’s on our website homepage or watch it here. Also, the production company idcreations (www.idcreations.com.cn ) generously created 100 dvds combining the SCAA documentary and the idcreations’ Xmas gala video which we gave to each guest at the party. If you have not received one, please contact me to get yours! (director@scaashanghai.org). It was a truly fun evening at O’Malleys which netted over RMB 7,000 for rescue medical care. SCAA thanks Sean McIlroy and the entire O’Malley’s team.
There are many upcoming SCAA events to look forward to, including our animal photo contest, March Happy Hour, April Talent Quest, and a change in venue for our next meeting!! For a change of pace and flavor, Heena and Depak Dharamdasani, owners of Indian Vintage (and long-time SCAA supporters) have offered the same generous package of RMB 100 for two drinks and plentiful Indian snacks (with RMB 70 donated per person to SCAA). Plus we’ll have our usual one raffle ticket included. No doubt many of us will order additional food as it’s all delicious! The date is 13 February, so please bring as many people as you can to show our thanks to all at Indian Vintage. Remember, this is our main form of fundraising!
On a separate note, our U.S. Director Cat Brandell, has recently had a serious operation on her hand to help relieve her severe arthritis. She may not be able to reply for awhile, but if you have time, please drop her a note to say get well and that we all miss her!! (brandejl@gmail.com)
Finally, SCAA is growing so quickly. Those of you coming along to adoption days might notice what a “zoo” it has become…we average well over 60 people each time, from foster parents with our wards, to potential adopters, adopted pets and parents coming for reunions, students doing community service, families with children just to pet some little ones, and animal lovers in general…it’s such a party! We are now in the process of registering SCAA as a Hong Kong-registered charity (for logistics and professional reasons) and creating several executive committees to oversee animal operations, medical services, business/website, fundraising, sponsorship, treasurer and administration/volunteering.
Hoping you all stay warm and cuddled up with your favorite furry loved ones! Look forward to seeing you at Indian Vintage on 13 February!
Warmest regards,
Carol Wolfson
Founder/Executive Director
SCAA
p.s. Last Sunday was one of the first Sundays off ever from SCAA-related events and I planned to sleep in and luxuriate in laziness. However, sometime in the middle of the night, I had two nightmares—not one, but two! The first was that although we already have a hotline, people do continue to call me on my personal cell phone and this was a call from an irate man. He asked me when I would be coming to pick up the three kittens he found in an alley and brought home. He said that the SCAA director he spoke to on the hotline promised that I would come get them in an hour or two. I told the guy that our directors would never offer to come pick up strays as that is not what we do but he kept getting angrier and angrier at me. I then woke up, thinking, “Phew, so glad that wasn’t a real call.” I went back to sleep and the next nightmare was that I was overseas in a theater, watching a performance. I was sitting in an aisle seat with my laptop at my feet (because, of course, we all take our notebooks with us to live concerts….). Suddenly it was gone and I saw the people walking away with my laptop! By the time I reached them, they were sitting at a restaurant table and denied taking the laptop…all I could think of was the various documents and emails I had to write for SCAA and I was screaming and calling to the police to come help me…I jolted up in bed after this one. So much for my restful Sunday morning. Do y’all think it’s time to find a beach somewhere?!!

Foster Care Highlight
SCAA’s Adorable Adult Cats
Loyal, friendly, affectionate, playful, keeps feet warm in winter, fetches toys, purrs on eye contact…these are just some of the qualities you can find in SCAA great adult foster cats.
SCAA is giving our cats an opportunity to shine in our Newsletter. We’ll be regularly profiling an SCAA cat who would love to be someone’s pet – sometimes for the second time after being abandoned to SCAA.
Meet Sassy. Sassy is a gorgeous ginger female – speyed and vaccinated. Don’t let her “diamond” collar fool you…she melts at the first sign you want to pick her up. Sassy loves hugs and is happy to watch the world go by at Adoption Day from her perch on someone’s shoulder. At home, she insists on belly rubs from foster dad Michael.
Sassy is around 1.5 years old. She has been in foster care since April 2006. She was a pregnant foster cat last Spring when SCAA took her in and her kitten, Boris, was adopted out quickly.
Although foster parents Beth and Micheal would miss having Sassy around, they would be thrilled to see her find the great permanent home that she deserves. For more information about adopting Sassy, please contact foster@scaashanghai.org for more details.

Thought for the Month
From SCAA member Howard Rosenthal.
Dog Logic
There is more truth than poetry in some of the sayings.

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.

Boston Clam Chowder
We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare.
And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.
-M. Acklam

Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people,
who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate.
-Sigmund Freud
I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult.
-Rita Rudner

A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down.
-Robert Benchley
Anybody who doesn't know what soap tastes like never washed a dog.
-Franklin P. Jones
If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I
have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons.
-James Thurber
If your dog is fat, you aren't getting enough exercise
-Unknown
My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3.00 a can.
That's almost $21.00 in dog money.
-Joe Weinstein
Ever consider what our dogs must think of us? I mean, here we come from a
grocery with the most amazing haul, chicken, pork, half a cow.
They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth!
-Anne Tyler
Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
-Robert A. Heinlein

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you;
that is the principal difference between a dog and a man.
-Mark Twain
You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says,
'Wow, you're right! I never would've thought of that!'
- Dave Barry

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
-Roger Caras
If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them.
