3rd Anniversary Congratulations from SCAA Founder Carol Wolfson

With the hope that although not long gone yet, I am also not yet completely forgotten, I would like to take a moment to congratulate all of you on the celebration of SCAA's third successful year since its establishment on 17 March 2005 (an easy date to remember)!!

I am not exactly sure what I had in mind when I started SCAA three years ago; probably just to start a small group of people able to save a few precious dogs and cats from cruel life and death on the streets of Shanghai. What started out as one person has grown quickly into a large and influential animal welfare/rescue ogranization composed of caring, passionate and dedicated volunteers from around the world. SCAA now has ten directors, a state-of-the-art website that attracts over 25,000 unique visitors worldwide a month (about 50% within China and 50% outside), infamous events throughout the year (!), education and art programs in Shanghai Schools (in coordination with the fantastic organization Roots & Shoots), and a hoarding project we have supported for over a year that has finally reached the situation where the 200-cat population (and about 10 dogs) is medically stable and the cats can be isolated, tested and adopted out, one by one, using very strict processing criteria; it is the first and only project of this kind in China and something to be very proud of. Considering some of the largest animal welfare organizations in the world are well over 50 years old, think of what SCAA has already accomplished in only three!!

Case in point: All of you involved in SCAA should be extremely proud that we've been chosen as the role model for non-traditional animal rescue in the first chapter of the UK RSPCA (the oldest animal welfare organization in the world) "Shelter Guidelines" book. I consciously decided when starting SCAA to not open a shelter in Shanghai (once you have a physical address, you will get animal dumping and end up with thousands of stray animals...) but instead rely solely on using a foster care network, the highest standards of western veterinary care with our partner PAW Vet Clinic, and adoption days where potential adopters come to meet fostered companion animals and are screened for providing permanent, loving homes...when you consider that this process can take anywhere from 3 weeks to over one year for each puppy, kitten, cat, dog (and 2 bunnies), it's simply amazing that within three years we have adopted out nearly 500 animals. One at a time and each truly loved. It breaks our hearts also when some of these precious animals don't make it but we take comfort in knowing they did not die on the street but instead in the loving arms of our dedicated foster parents.

Although my husband and I have now moved to Malaysia (come and visit...it's SO warm!!), I am in regular contact with our directors and members and look forward to hear of the many exciting events, projects and programs for 2008. Please do attend the monthly meetings as this provides the very core funding for the ever-increasing medical bills. Spring is coming and so will hundreds of new born stray kittens and puppies; SCAA needs your help more than ever no matter whether it's attending events, volunteering at events/projects, assisting with accounting, administrative tasks or website maintenance, donating funds, writing for our newsletter/website/press releases, fostering or just coming along to hold our adoption day babies, each of you can make a difference in the life of an animal in need.

Congratulations SCAA. I am so proud to call so many of you dear friends as well as my SCAA colleagues. If you'd ever like to chat, just email me at founder@scaashanghai.org

With warmest regards, ruffs and purrs,
Carol Wolfson

Dear SCAA Community,

What a long strange trip it's been. Way back in 2005 when Carol asked me to make a website pro bono, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I designed the first site using just a few pictures of cats from Baoshan (where those famous SCAA eyes came from), a logo and loads of text (something we are never short of). SCAA slowly but surely took over my life. As someone who had always loved having dogs, I started fostering and liking cats. I went from running startup internet companies to executive director of a startup animal welfare organization. I feel honored working with so many fantastic supporters to build such a unique and wonderful organization in Shanghai.

Happy Birthday SCAA! Best wishes for a great future and many, many more rescued cats and dogs living in happy homes.

Domino's Family

Nina
Nina with a very special rescue

Irene and Marc Ulbrich recently proved how one child can make a difference in the world of an abandoned animal in Shanghai by hosting a very special birthday party for their daughter Nina and dog Domino, adopted from SCAA. Instead of asking for presents, Nina, in the spirit of SCAA, asked people to donate money to help the unfortunate dogs in Shanghai. On her birthday alone, she helped raise RMB 2,127.07 (including a little of her savings). Thanks so much Ulbrich family! And thanks to former foster mom and family friend Susie Klein for her support and encouragement. It's kind-hearted folks like you who help make SCAA the success it is today.

Surprising Adoption Success for Project Huang's Cats

Baoshan

SCAA is very pleased to announce that our first adult cats from our local project were successfully adopted out to good permanent homes the moment they received the all-clear for adoption. Not even our youngest foster kittens can boast about being so popular! Cats Midnight, Sarah and Brad (2 to 3 years old) were chosen as the first group of adult cats for re-homing because of their affectionate personality and overall great disposition.

The cats were tested for FIVE, FeLV and then placed in foster homes where they received care from dedicated foster parents for minor skin problems and viruses. Foster parents were amazed at how friendly and easy-going these adult cats were - "like a dog in a cat's body" is how Sarah's foster mom described her.

Not surprisingly, all three cats were adopted by active families looking for relaxed and social pets. Brad's adopters wrote " We are so happy that we have him in our family. He is the most amazing cat. He is very loving and generous with everyone in the family." As another round of testing and isolation begins for cats Jack, Apricot and Shadow, we all hope they find their own good homes when they're ready to meet potential adopters.

Felixoscar

Matchmaking: Kitties and Kiddies

Cat Stats

Names: Felix and Oscar
Age: 12 months
Rescue: Found on the street, cold and hungry, when they were only a month old
Funny habit: Chasing around the vacuum cleaner
Status: Adopted (together!)

My friends search for the “right” cat companions
SCAA recently had the pleasure of adopting a couple of gorgeous black and white cats to 4 very close friends of mine. These friends are a family living in Pudong: Peter, Caitlin (the parents), Max and Elliott who are their two gregarious blonde-headed boys. (With very disarming smiles - be careful ladies.)

There had been some discussion in their household about getting an animal (or two!) and the best seemed to be cats as they had a history with cats and they were the best option for apartment living. The challenge was to find two cats that had the right personality to mesh with two active, engaging and particular twin 4 year boys.

Felix and Oscar
Felix and Oscar relaxing in SCAA foster care

When I presented this quandary to our Foster Care Director, Lee Anne Armstrong, she said she would search her foster list and we would try our best to find a good fit. The main quality we were looking for was “flop” quality. Of course, you normally want your cats to be playful - displacing the rugs, doing cartoon impersonations as they round corners too fast, but in this circumstance we needed cats that were also willing to be stroked, willing to be picked up and not lose their cool. They needed to have “flop”.

My friends Max and Elliot meet Felix and Oscar

So, with that in mind, a couple of cats in foster care were considered: Felix and Oscar. These were a couple of lithe adolescent black and white brothers that seemed to have some of what we were looking for, actively floppable. They were screened at their foster home briefly, where Peter was rather impressed when Felix and Oscar greeted him at the door and proceeded to vie for his attention. Soon after, Felix and Oscar were off to their new home.

To say these two have been a fit into the household would be an understatement. They are part of the family now and have certainly proved SCAA’s faith in them by displaying two of the most likable personalities you would ever see. The boys, Max and Elliott were thrilled with the new additions and immediately put the cat's flop quality to the test. You know how so many animals, cats and dogs will run the instant the vacuum cleaner comes on? Not these two, but they are not indifferent either; they actually chase and follow the vacuum around! So many cats would also not take kindly to having their eyes opened and closed for them, as Max often demonstrates for guests: “cats eyes open, cats eyes closed, cats eyes open, cats eyes closed.”

Felix Oscar 2
Felix and Oscar really making themselves at home!

This story is a great example of how we at SCAA try our best and hardest to find the right animal(s) for a family and vice versa. With animals and with people, there are no guarantees for sure, but we tried and found a match that has worked beautifully. Max and Elliott now have two more playmates in the house and the family home has a warmth to it that was not there before.

Our thanks go out to Peter, Caitlin, Max and Elliott for giving Felix and Oscar such a wonderful home.

In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth. The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans' that could be found quickly, were a litter of weanling pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops? Take a look...you won't believe your eyes!!
