Introduction:
Greetings All! Hope you are staying warm here in China and shoveled out if you are SCAA U.S. readers! So much is happening in the coming months for SCAA, so let’s get right to it!
First, thanks to our 50+ supporters who battled nasty weather and rain to join us for a really fun and cozy evening meeting/party at Indian Vintage on 13 February. The nibbles were fantastic and most of us dined the night away as well. Our sincerest thanks to Heena and Depak Dharamdasala for making us so welcome. Next month, we head back to our usual comfort food at O’Malley’s on 20 March. Don’t forget this is our main source of raising funds for our growing medical care costs, so be sure to join us!! It’s always a great party with our expanding SCAA family!
We have planned several great events before the school summer holidays begin (at which time we will no doubt have zillions of kittens and puppies to foster and adopt out as baby season begins…so that’s our main summer event!). We have SCAA’s first happy hour, our ongoing photo contest (deadline 31 March), upcoming April talent quest (we need talent and volunteers!), kids’ art competition (we need teacher contacts at schools and kids/parents to participate, visit the exhibition and join in on the finalist coffee morning at the Glamour Bar on 20 May!), and 21 April Earth Day Booth (we need volunteers). Phew!
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all our wonderful SCAA supporters who voted to have me once again nominated as one of five finalists in the societal contribution category of the upcoming 10 March Expatriate Professional Women’s Society 2007 Businesswomen’s Awards. This has less to do about me than the fact I am honored EPWS award-voters continue to recognize the value of SCAA’s work in Shanghai for both the abandoned animals we have all helped and for our dedicated foster parents and volunteers who love and rescue them. Bravo everyone!
Wish you all a very happy and restful Chinese New Year and join us in a prayer that breeding season waits a little longer this spring! Hoping to see you at all of our events….it’s going to be a busy and exciting few months ahead!
Warmest regards,
Carol Wolfson

News Update
SCAA Animal Photo Contest Continues: We are receiving some fantastic photos of SCAA animals but there is still one month to go!! Get that camera out and start taking photos of your SCAA animals (foster care, adopted or your own pets as SCAA members) for our first annual photo contest! There are two categories: Best Overall Photo and Funniest Photo. Prizes for each category are generously sponsored by vip-Pet : First prize voucher RMB 500, Second Prize RMB 400 and Third Prize RMB 300. Deadline is 31 March 2007. Winners will be announced at our Talent Quest Fundraising Event in April (date/venue pending!). Remember, YOU must take these photos and not use photos downloaded off internet sites! Send your great SCAA animal photos to director@scaashanghai.org
Art Competition Begins: We are so excited to announce our first SCAA kids’ dog and cat art competition. This is a trial run and we are limiting the entrants to international schools since we are not registered as an organization to work with local schools. If a great success (and we plan it to be!), we then hope to work with Roots & Shoots to hold a much more expansive competition in the autumn! We now need teachers from various int’l schools to act as our SCAA reps and accept the entry applications and art work. If you are interested, please contact Emily at director2@scaashanghai.org. We are thrilled to be partners with the Eno group (owner Renee Hartman and hubby Sage Brennan are SCAA adoptive parents!) which will exhibit the top entries (we are hoping for fifty!) from 11-19 May. Judges will include Dr. James, Renee, SCAA Director Emily Osann (an artist herself), a representative from the Glamour Bar and we hope to have a famous local artist involved as well. There will be a silent auction for all of the art from the beginning of the exhibition. On 20 May, the top 20 finalists will be exhibited during a fantastic coffee, cake and cookie morning at the Glamour Bar on the Bund, from 10am-noon! (This is probably one of the only chances for parents and kids to be together at this very glamorous bar!) Adult entry fee will be RMB 80 and kids RMB 40…all proceeds will be donated to SCAA. The top four winners (in the four different age categories) will be announced and their art will be used to create Eno t-shirts and products for SCAA; Eno will donate 10% of all sales to SCAA too! Finally, this event on 20 May will lead to the book launch at 4pm of Carol Wolfson’s new book The Last Pluck, but we’ll save information on this for a future SCAA newsletter. (Be sure to cement this date in your calendar. The Glamour Bar is generously hosting the launch and will charge RMB 50 for entry and a glass of wine, all of which will be donated to SCAA. Our goal is over 300 people so ask everyone you know! There is going to be a very very special raffle as well, but for now, it’s a secret!). Back to the art competition! If you are a parent, teacher or know someone with kids….urge them to join! See poster

Project Updates
- Mr. Wong 150+ cat visit set: Dr. James and Carol Wolfson plan to finally visit a potential "project" in the Baoshan area (all the hoarders seem to head out that way...) on 21 February. We have an SCAA member who lives in the U.S. that has been paying his rent (he was four hours away from Shanghai but agreed to move closer for us to even consider assisting him) and giving him a monthly stipend to pay for food. He has agreed to follow SCAA guidelines (we've heard this before...) so we will visit and assess the situation and report back to you all at our next SCAA meeting on 20 March. We really would like to have a local project to assist so we have a location to take our volunteers to, but we also must be extremely careful not to get caught up in a never-ending quagmire that ends with us having to quit a project, such as we did with our last Baoshan project in June 2006. Too heart-breaking. Stay tuned.
SCAA Upcoming Fundraising Events
- Join SCAA's Very First Happy Hour 1 March, 6-9pm:
There was a gentle hint drifting in the air that SCAA members would love a social occasion just to relax and enjoy each others’ company without Carol babbling on for hours (and let’s not even get started about Dr. James!). Do join our first ever happy hour at the Naked Cow Restaurant….fantastic food and libations and a large percentage of the food/drink sales will donated to SCAA!
April Talent Quest Fundraiser: Talent Needed! We need talent for our SCAA First Annual Talent Quest Fundraising Event in April 2007events@scaashanghai.org! We need about 10-15 acts and also volunteers for the night. Venue and date still pending. Should be a fantastic night of fun and fun(d)-raising!. See poster for details.
Upcoming SCAA Community Events
- 21 April Earth Day: Volunteers Needed: SCAA has been generously offered a booth at the 2nd Annual Earthday Celebration, inside the Shanghai Zoo and organized by Rainbow Bridge International School. As last year, our contact/coordinator is SCAA devoted foster mommy Kate DuClos! We will need 4-6 volunteers to man the booth, distribute SCAA brochures and sell products. If you can volunteer for this festive event, please contact Carol at director@scaashanghai.org
Media/Website News
- Monthly Video Clip Awards: We have two winners this month: A bunny envelope cutter video submitted by our own website designer and business manager Milton Menefee and a home video of Shannen Quek and hubby Matt’s foster kitty Mao that has since been adopted and is flying off to the U.S. soon (let’s hope he doesn’t figure out how to open the airplane door!)
Please go here to see the co-winner's two videos for this month., and be sure to send in your own clips for next month’s meeting to director@scaashanghai.org
